When You Trust Allah, Do You Still Have to Worry About the Future?

You made the duʿā’. You made the effort. You did everything you could. But you still don’t know what tomorrow will bring.

Will the marriage happen? Will the business survive? Will the job come? Will the opportunity you have been praying for finally open?

And then your mind begins asking: “What if it doesn’t?”

You tell yourself, “I trust Allah.” But your heart is still afraid.

Does that mean you have lost your tawakkul?

Tawakkul does not mean doing nothing

Sometimes we misunderstand what it means to trust Allah. We think the person with tawakkul should never worry, never make plans and never feel afraid.

That isn’t tawakkul.

You can plan. You can work. You can save. You can apply for the job. You can prepare for the examination. You can seek treatment. You can take every legitimate means available to you.

Then you reach the point where your ability ends.

Tawakkul is not abandoning the means. It is refusing to believe that the means control the outcome. You use what Allah has placed in your hands while knowing that the final result belongs to Him.

You are worrying about a tomorrow you haven’t been given

This is where many believers exhaust themselves.

Tomorrow has not arrived, but your mind is already living there. You are worrying about a conversation that hasn’t happened, a rejection you haven’t received, a problem that hasn’t occurred, a door that hasn’t closed.

You are suffering today because of a future Allah has not yet placed in your hands.

Ask yourself: “What can I actually do about this today?”

If there is something within your ability, do it. If there isn’t, then hand it back to Allah.

Allah is sufficient

Notice what Allah does not promise. He does not promise that you will know exactly what tomorrow holds.

He promises that He will be sufficient for you.

You don’t need to know the future to trust Allah. You need to know Who holds it.

Remember Mūsā عليه السلام

When Mūsā عليه السلام stood before the sea with Pharaoh’s army approaching from behind, his people were terrified.

They said:

But Mūsā عليه السلام said:

Mūsā عليه السلام did not know how Allah would save them. He only knew Who was with him.

Your future is not your responsibility to control

Sometimes we say, “I trust Allah.” But what we really mean is, “I trust Allah to give me exactly what I want.”

Real tawakkul is deeper.

You may see a closed door as a disaster while Allah knows what was behind it. You may see delay as rejection while Allah is preparing you. You may think nothing is happening while Allah is arranging what you cannot see.

So make the duʿā’. Take the means. Work hard. Prepare wisely. Then leave the outcome to Allah.

Tomorrow belongs to Allah

You are responsible for today’s obedience.

Pray today. Make duʿā’ today. Work today. Repent today. Be grateful today. Take the necessary means today.

When tomorrow arrives, Allah will give you what you need to face it.

So yes, you may still worry about the future. You may feel afraid. You may have moments of uncertainty. But don’t let your fear convince you that Allah has abandoned you.

You don’t know what tomorrow holds. But you know Who holds tomorrow.
