MARRIAGE • SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT

Why Is My Marriage Delayed?

Is it siḥr, evil eye — or Allah’s timing?

By Imam Lateef Olasheni28 August 20265-minute reflection

“Do not deny the unseen. But do not blame the unseen for everything you have not yet understood.”

You have prayed for marriage. You have made duʿā’ after duʿā’. Perhaps people have introduced you to potential spouses, but something always seems to go wrong. A promising relationship suddenly ends. Families disagree. Someone who appeared interested disappears without explanation.

After experiencing this repeatedly, a frightening question may enter your mind:

“Is something spiritually blocking my marriage?”

Perhaps someone has even told you, “This is not normal. Somebody has done something to you.”

But before fear takes control of your heart, understand this:

Keep the balance
  • Not every delay is a blockage.
  • Not every rejection is siḥr.
  • Not every closed marriage door means something is spiritually wrong with you.

At the same time, Islam does not require us to deny the unseen simply because we cannot explain it physically. Siḥr is real. ʿAyn — the evil eye — is real. Spiritual harm is real.

Siḥr is real — but it is not greater than Allah

The Qur’an itself speaks about siḥr. But notice the boundary Allah places around its power:

وَمَا هُم بِضَارِّينَ بِهِۦ مِنْ أَحَدٍ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ
“But they could not harm anyone through it except by Allah’s permission.”Qur’an 2:102

This changes the way a believer thinks. We acknowledge siḥr without giving it an independent power that belongs only to Allah.

Do not deny the unseen. But do not blame the unseen for everything you have not yet understood.

Before saying your marriage is blocked

Ask some difficult but necessary questions. Are your expectations realistic? Are you repeatedly choosing people who are unsuitable for you? Are family pressures interfering with potential marriages? Are financial circumstances contributing? Are there behaviours, communication problems or unresolved emotional issues that need attention?

Sometimes what we call a spiritual blockage is actually a pattern that Allah wants us to recognize and correct.

And sometimes, after examining ordinary causes carefully, there may genuinely be circumstances that warrant spiritual attention and Qur’anic ruqyah. These possibilities do not have to contradict each other.

A person can perform ruqyah while also correcting behaviour, seeking wise counsel and improving the practical way they pursue marriage. Ruqyah should never become an excuse to stop examining ourselves.

What if Allah Himself is delaying it?

There is another possibility that fear often prevents us from considering: perhaps nobody is blocking your marriage. Perhaps Allah has simply not opened that door yet.

“Perhaps you dislike something which is good for you, and perhaps you love something which is bad for you. Allah knows and you do not know.”Qur’an 2:216

You see the person you wanted. Allah sees the marriage you would have had with them. You see the rejection. Allah sees what that rejection may have protected you from.

Before asking, “Who is blocking my marriage?” perhaps ask, “What is Allah developing in me while marriage is delayed?”

Patience? Discernment? Maturity? Independence? A stronger relationship with Him?

In the path of spiritual purification, the delay itself can become a teacher. Sometimes Allah changes the person who is waiting before He changes what they are waiting for.

What should you do?

Continue making duʿā’. Continue seeking marriage through lawful means. Maintain your ṣalāh and morning and evening adhkār. Recite al-Fātiḥah, Āyat al-Kursī, al-Ikhlāṣ, al-Falaq and al-Nās. Make ruqyah for yourself without becoming obsessed with discovering who supposedly harmed you.

And continue examining the practical circumstances of your life.

Most importantly, do not allow fear of siḥr to become greater in your heart than certainty in Allah.

If there is spiritual harm, Allah can remove it. If there is a practical problem, Allah can guide you towards correcting it. And if it is simply not yet your time, Allah knows the door — and the person — that He has written for you.

When the pattern needs individual attention

A general article cannot determine whether a particular person’s repeated marriage difficulties are spiritual, practical, psychological, relational — or a combination of several factors.

Where difficulties are persistent, unusual or difficult to understand, careful individual assessment may be more appropriate than repeatedly diagnosing yourself from things you read online.

Thabat Hub offers confidential spiritual consultation and Qur’an-based Ruqyah guidance for those who would like their individual circumstances considered carefully.

But remember: a spiritual guide is only a means. Allah is the Source.

And whether your marriage comes tomorrow or much later, never allow the delay of one blessing to make you forget the blessings Allah has already placed in your life.

“Remember: your faith is not enough until you attain certainty in your actions.”
